Bunion Treatment in Houston, TX

Bunion treatment in Houston, TX
A bunion is more than a bump on the side of your foot. It’s a progressive deformity of the big toe joint that can make shoes uncomfortable, change the way you walk, and lead to other foot problems. Dr. Ken Dennis helps Houston patients slow bunion progression, relieve pain, and, when necessary, correct the deformity surgically.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion (hallux valgus) forms when the big toe drifts toward the second toe, pushing the joint at the base of the big toe outward. Over time, the bony bump becomes larger and more prominent. A smaller version, called a tailor’s bunion or bunionette, can form at the base of the little toe.

Causes of Bunions

  • Inherited foot structure and faulty foot mechanics
  • Flat feet and overpronation
  • Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes that crowd the toes
  • Arthritis and joint laxity
  • Foot injuries

Symptoms of Bunions

  • A visible bump on the side of the big toe joint
  • Pain, redness, and swelling around the joint
  • Corns or calluses where the toes rub together
  • Stiffness and limited movement of the big toe
  • Difficulty finding comfortable shoes

Bunions can also contribute to hammertoes and Morton’s neuroma as the forefoot becomes crowded.

Non-Surgical Bunion Treatment

Conservative care can relieve pain and slow progression:

  • Wider shoes with a roomy toe box and low heel
  • Bunion pads and toe spacers
  • Custom foot orthotics to control abnormal foot motion
  • Anti-inflammatory medication and icing
  • Cortisone injections for joint inflammation

Bunion Surgery

When pain persists and limits daily activities, bunion surgery can realign the bones, correct the deformity, and relieve pain. Dr. Dennis will recommend the procedure best suited to your bunion’s severity and performs surgery at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital and Cy-Fair Surgery Center. If you’ve been told you need bunion surgery, he also offers second opinions.

Bunion FAQs

Do bunions go away on their own?

No. Bunions are a progressive structural deformity. Conservative treatment can relieve pain and slow progression, but only surgery corrects the deformity.

Are bunions hereditary?

Foot structure that makes bunions more likely is often inherited, but tight or narrow footwear can speed their development.

Can orthotics help bunions?

Custom orthotics can improve foot mechanics, reduce pressure on the big toe joint, and help slow bunion progression.

When should I consider bunion surgery?

Consider surgery when bunion pain limits your daily activities or doesn’t improve with footwear changes, padding, and orthotics.

How long is recovery from bunion surgery?

Recovery depends on the procedure. Many patients walk in a protective shoe or boot shortly after surgery, with full recovery taking several weeks to a few months.

What shoes are best for bunions?

Choose shoes with a wide, deep toe box, soft uppers, and a low heel to reduce pressure on the joint.
