Ingrown Toenail Treatment in Houston, TX

Ingrown toenails are the most common nail problem we see, and they can turn a simple walk into a painful experience. The good news is that relief is fast. Dr. Ken Dennis performs a quick in-office procedure that removes the ingrown portion of the nail and, for patients with recurring problems, can permanently keep it from growing back.
What Is an Ingrown Toenail?
Toenails normally grow straight out. Sometimes, however, one or both corners or sides of the nail curve and grow into the soft tissue of the toe. This leads to irritation, redness, swelling, and often infection. The big toe is the most common location, but any toe can be affected.
Causes of Ingrown Toenails
- Improperly trimmed nails, especially cutting the corners too short or rounding the edges
- Heredity and naturally curved nails
- Shoe pressure and crowding of the toes
- Repeated trauma to the feet from sports and normal activities
- Toe injuries, such as stubbing or dropping something on the foot
Symptoms of an Ingrown Toenail
- Pain and tenderness along the side of the nail
- Redness and swelling
- Drainage or pus
- Odor
- Overgrown, prominent skin tissue (proud flesh)
Ingrown Toenail Treatment Options
Dr. Dennis will numb the toe with a local anesthetic and carefully remove the ingrown portion of the nail. If an infection is present, he may prescribe a topical or oral medication. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.
If ingrown nails are a chronic problem, Dr. Dennis can perform a permanent procedure. The ingrown corner of the nail is removed along with the matrix, or root, of that section so it does not grow back. The rest of the nail remains intact and looks natural.
Avoid “Bathroom Surgery”
Digging out an ingrown nail at home often makes the problem worse and can lead to serious infection. This is especially dangerous for people with diabetes or peripheral neuropathy, who should always see a podiatrist for nail care.
Preventing Ingrown Toenails
Trim nails straight across without rounding the corners, keep them at a moderate length, and wear shoes with enough room for your toes. Patients with toenail fungus or thickened nails may benefit from professional nail care.

Ingrown Toenail FAQs
Is ingrown toenail removal painful?
The toe is numbed with a local anesthetic before the procedure, so most patients feel only the initial injection. Discomfort afterward is usually mild.
How long does the procedure take?
An ingrown toenail procedure usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is performed right in our office.
Will my ingrown toenail come back?
If you have recurring ingrown nails, a permanent procedure removes the nail root along the affected edge so it won’t grow back.
How long is recovery after ingrown toenail removal?
Most patients return to normal activities the next day. Full healing typically takes one to two weeks.
Can children have ingrown toenails treated?
Yes. Ingrown toenails are common in children and teens, and the procedure is quick and safe for young patients.
How should I trim my toenails to prevent ingrown nails?
Cut nails straight across, avoid rounding the corners, and don’t trim them too short.
When is an ingrown toenail an emergency?
Seek care promptly if you notice spreading redness, pus, fever, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
