Ankle Sprain Treatment in Houston, TX

Ankle sprain and sports injury treatment in Houston, TX
A rolled ankle can happen anywhere, on the basketball court, running trail, soccer field, or simply stepping off a curb. While many people try to “walk it off,” an untreated sprain can lead to chronic pain and repeat injuries. As a fellowship-trained sports podiatrist and former Medical Director of the Houston Marathon, Dr. Ken Dennis helps athletes and active adults heal properly and get back to what they love.

What Is an Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn. Most sprains happen on the outside of the ankle when the foot rolls inward. Sprains are graded by severity, from mild stretching (grade 1) to a partial tear (grade 2) or complete tear (grade 3).

Common Causes

  • Landing awkwardly from a jump
  • Sudden twisting or pivoting during sports
  • Walking or running on uneven surfaces
  • Unsupportive or worn-out footwear
  • Previous ankle sprains and weak ankle ligaments

Symptoms of an Ankle Sprain

  • Pain, especially when bearing weight
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Tenderness around the ankle
  • Limited range of motion
  • A feeling of instability or the ankle “giving way”

Is It a Sprain or a Fracture?

Sprains and fractures can look and feel similar. Dr. Dennis takes in-office X-rays to check for broken bones and can order an MRI to evaluate ligament and tendon damage when needed.

Ankle Sprain Treatment Options

  • Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)
  • Ankle braces or a walking boot for support
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Physical therapy to restore strength, balance, and flexibility
  • Custom foot orthotics to improve stability
  • Surgical repair for severe tears or chronic ankle instability

Preventing Repeat Sprains

Completing rehabilitation, wearing supportive shoes, strengthening the ankle, and bracing during high-risk activities greatly reduce the chance of re-injury. Runners should also watch for related problems such as plantar fasciitis.

Ankle Sprain FAQs

How do I know if my ankle is sprained or broken?

It can be hard to tell without an X-ray. Severe pain, inability to bear weight, and tenderness over the bone are reasons to have your ankle evaluated promptly.

How long does an ankle sprain take to heal?

Mild sprains often heal in one to three weeks, while moderate to severe sprains can take six weeks to several months.

Should I walk on a sprained ankle?

Light walking may be fine for a mild sprain, but if walking is painful, rest and support the ankle and have it evaluated.

When should I see a podiatrist for an ankle sprain?

See a podiatrist if you can’t bear weight, swelling is severe, pain doesn’t improve within a few days, or you’ve sprained the same ankle before.

Can ankle sprains cause long-term problems?

Yes. Sprains that don’t heal properly can lead to chronic pain, ankle instability, and repeat injuries.

Do I need surgery for an ankle sprain?

Most ankle sprains heal without surgery. Surgery may be needed for complete ligament tears or chronic instability that doesn’t improve with rehabilitation.
